Newsletter: Term 3, Week 3
It's the end of a challenging week in our school community where the winter bugs have caught up with many. We have seen a return to better health as the week has ended, but it's tough on young families, and I hope this weekend brings some further rest for those young ones who have been at sick home or not been 100% but were able to keep trucking through...and some respite for the whānau.
I have had the pleasure over the last two weeks of attending of our trips to Rāpaki Marae with Te Urunga and Te Ana classes. If you are able to help out on our Waipātiki and Tamahika visits to experience time on our local hapū’s marae, you won’t regret it. We are so fortunate to have such a strong partnership with Ngāti Wheke, and this connection enables our young people to learn so much more about their local area and Tikanga Māori. Because of the strength of this relationship, we have 6-year-olds in our school who know why Rāpaki is called Rāpaki! Ask your young person about Te Rakiwhakaputa. You can watch this awesome short animated film together to jog their memories if need be.
These relationships with local hapū and wider iwi have come about through the strength of our Aupaki Kāhui Ako (cluster of schools). Our students will be connecting under the Aupaki banner with a cultural festival later in the term, Aupaki Rocks in Term 4, and the Year 8 conference also in Term 4. Last term, we saw Techfest take place at Tūranga. Another excellent part of our Kāhui is the relationships formed with teachers across our schools and the shared professional learning focus. Sadly, the government made the decision that Kāhui Ako and their funding are to be disestablished at the end of this school year. This will have a large impact on funding the amazing student-centred opportunities that Aupaki has enabled our school. Our Kāhui has also created excellent leadership opportunities within our teaching team and vital school principal support. Over the coming weeks, our Aupaki schools will be looking at ways to keep our collaborative partnership strong and opportunities rich for our learners, without the funding to support it.
As Aupaki schools, we set a shared start to the year to keep things consistent across the local area. Traditionally, Aupaki schools have started with a teacher-only day to kick the year off together, and then individual schools have set their start-of-school-year dates from that. So bear with us if you are planning the back end of your summers as we can’t give you that start-of-year info just yet. Hopefully, we will have that for you soon.
Here’s to a fresh start next week! Wishing you all a restful weekend. Hoping the weather brings us all some sun and a chance to open up some doors and windows.
