Newsletter: Term 3, Week 5

I was at Bandquest last night to support our two bands, Ultraviolet and Royal Static, playing at the James Hay Theatre. What an opportunity for our young musicians! Whilst not amongst the winners on the evening, credit to the groups for their performances in an arena that many of us would run far away from! A huge thanks to Colin Lumb, our band teacher who has worked really hard with our kids. It’s great to see our school in events alongside the wider Ōtautahi | Christchurch schools and we learned last night that there are some very talented musicians beyond our community, just like we find out when we go to wider sporting events. We are excited to be in Tūhono, the city-wide Kapa Haka festival in Term 4 where we will no doubt experience a similar feeling in seeing the talent beyond our Aupaki cluster of schools.
On a similar note, a huge congratulations to our Jump Jam teams who did so well last weekend, taking out a 1st and 2nd in their age groups. The time and energy to practice and work together clearly paying off for these awesome teams coached by Jenna Powell and Sarah Sjoberg-Loose. More of the same hard mahi to come for our ePro8 Semi-finalists and Cantamath teams competing on Wednesday in their respective events.
The state schooling sector is entering into pay negotiations time with the government, which looks to be a challenging one. There is a collective push back against the deals offered so far to different groups within the various school sectors from support staff, teachers and principals. An NZEI collective paid union meeting is being held on the afternoon of Monday 25th August which will have some impact on our regular school routines. We are asking for whānau to pick up their children from school at 12.30pm on the 25th August if able to as we look to run a revised programme for remaining students with a small number of staff on site. If you need your child to stay at school we just ask you complete this form to enable us to plan for the number of students we have at school on this afternoon. We really appreciate your support here.

An exciting new event on the horizon is being promoted in this newsletter. Battle of the Bays is a festival football match between Redcliffs and Sumner. We want this to become an annual event for our school and one our PTA is getting behind in a big way. Do your bit to stoke the rivalry at sport this weekend! It will be a great opportunity to enjoy an event for the whole family so mark your calendars for Saturday 29th November. If you have any awesome celebrity football connections, or keen to represent our please get in touch with Mike Lough, the big brain behind the event - his details on the promo info below.
Lastly, please make sure to read the Board elections voting information in this newsletter. We are running ours via an online model so there are a few steps to work through.
Have a great rest of your week, might see you at Bark and Beers for a nice community-focused finish to the week.

Important School Information
Student Accounts and the Hero App
With the halfway point of the school year behind us, now is a great time to check your financial statement in Hero to ensure that there are no unwelcome surprises waiting for you at the end of the year.
With a Ministry of Education equity index of 400, Te Raekura Redcliffs is not eligible to opt in to the schools donation scheme and therefore rely on donations from parents to help meet our desired educational outcomes. Donations may be requested for specified activities (e.g. camps), or for non-specific purposes. Further information about the annual school donation that is requested by our kura can be found here.
Statements are available to view by selecting the finance icon in Hero.
If you have any questions around your school account or if you’d like to discuss payment options, please contact Rachael in the school office (rachael.davis@redcliffs.school.nz). Please be assured that all financial information, including any communication about your school accounts, is kept confidential.

School Board of Trustees Election 2025
Voting in the election of parent representatives on our new Board of Trustees is now open.
In this election, we are engaging “myschoolelection” to allow us to offer electronic voting to parents. If you have provided us with a unique email address and New Zealand mobile phone number, you are eligible to cast your vote via the electronic platform.
To take advantage of this option, please keep an eye on your email inbox for a message from “My School Election”, with the subject line “[Te Raekura Redcliffs School] Invitation to Vote School Board Election”, and follow the link in the email. Please be aware that this email may be sent on multiple occasions to act as a reminder but you are only eligible to cast one vote (for up to 5 candidates).
If you are voting online, please ensure that you enter your mobile phone number without any spaces or dashes, and without the +64 or 0064 prefix (e.g. 021123456). The unique voting code that you have been sent should be entered manually rather than copy and pasted to meet authenticity requirements.
We have 13 wonderful candidates standing in this election. Please take the time to review their candidate statements online or in the hardcopy booklet available at the school office. A huge thank you to all of our candidates who are standing in the election!
Voting closes at 4.00pm on Wednesday 10th September, with votes counted on Tuesday 16th September (allowing for the return of any postal votes).

Digital Confidence Week - Week 7 (August 25th - 29th)
In Week 7, we’re taking part in Digital Confidence Week—a follow-up to our earlier focus on digital safety. Using the Digital Learners programme by Emma Planicka, students will explore how to build confidence and independence in the way they use technology more appropriately, both at school and at home.
Throughout the week, classes will be learning about:
- Managing screen time in a balanced and healthy way
- Making smart choices about which digital tools and platforms to use
- Building good digital habits for learning and wellbeing
- Recognising positive digital role models
- Setting up a simple weekly digital plan they can use at home
Once again, the Navington family will help guide these lessons with their relatable, real-life situations. We encourage you to continue the kōrero at home—perhaps by helping your child create their weekly digital plan or talking about what good digital habits look like in your whānau.
