Newsletter: Term 4, Week 1
Like the sideways rain and wind that lashed us on Sunday to finish the term break, we storm into another school term with lots of exciting goals to achieve and experiences to share with our community.
Term 4 kicks off with our full school athletics day next Monday on a slightly condensed space on our field. This is due to the hard mahi that has gone into preparing our school for the Battle of the Bays coming up in late November. We had an awesome group of school parents and neighbours in that same sideways rain and wind last weekend, filling in potholes and resowing grass on a field that never really took to new life by the ocean when the school was first built. A huge thanks to everyone who helped out. This has been long overdue work and will have benefits for our grounds for years to come, not to mention save the ligaments and joints of some local football stars in 7 weeks time.
Speaking of community, It was a privilege to welcome our new school whānau at our mihi whakatau this week. An awesome way to start the term and see the confidence in our students growing as they perform our school waiata and haka. Please say hello to our new families in Te Ana, Te Urunga and Waipātiki when you see them at drop off or pick up.
We have our first board of trustees meeting on Monday with our newly elected board. We have much to do in the short time available before the end of the school year. One of the key roles of our new board is to set the strategic direction of our kura for the next three years and we will be looking at ways to include your voice in the coming weeks to help us set that. Supporting that will be some system reviews around reporting, homework and our school transition processes.
In staffing news, we will be farewelling Abby Blanch, our Deputy Principal who has been on parental leave in 2025, at the end of this year. Abby has resigned to take time away from school life to raise her young son, Austin. Abby initially came on board during the transition of Redcliffs school from the temporary site at Van Asch in Sumner, to where we stand now as Te Raekura Redcliffs. Abby played a big part in the development of our learning support systems and had a key role in the day to day running of staff support and learning in the classroom. She was also on the board of trustees as staff rep. Her pedagogical knowledge is second to none! We will farewell Abby officially at our end of year prize giving in December (11th).
One of our main strategic goals is to connect our learning to the amazing local area in which we want our young people to be guardians (kaitiaki). With this in mind we are celebrating another welcome to the Kuaka (Godwits) day on Wednesday next week. Our friends from the Ihutai | Estuary trust will be sharing in this event.
Finally, our whare ako assignment for the term will be coming home next week. We are looking the celebrate those local legends young and old, past and present who would make great ambassadors for our school values for future young people to learn about (and from). We would love for everyone in our school to get behind this assignment as it celebrates those in our local area that we know, love and look up to - for the little things and the big things they have done. These stories will form a big part of our learning next year as we look to further develop our school values, sense of belonging, and kaitiakitanga (guardianship).
So much to achieve as a school community this term, and looking forward to the mahi ahead.

P.s - Best of luck to the golfers taking part in the inaugural 'Swamp Thing' Classic on Sunday. A huge thanks to Tim Loftus and Cam Hall for organising another cool tradition for years to come.
