Term 3 - Week 10

Principal's Pānui

Kia ora koutou,

We’ve sure packed a lot into our 10 weeks again this term. It started with our mid-year reports being published and ends with our Year 7/8s at the Koru Games and a visiting group to China. In that time, we’ve ticked off some big-ticket items across the spectrum of opportunities our kids are so fortunate to have access to, including: Aupaki Rocks, Bandquest, Book Week and Character Day, the Disco, Court Theatre, Digital Learners' Week, Winter Sport, Zones Tournaments, hosting an international student exchange, financial literacy lessons, Maths Week, Cantamaths, Jump Jam Finals, Tennis Coaching, Duathlon, Aquabots, a Market Day, Te wiki o te reo Māori, and the Aupaki Schools Cultural Festival (which we were stunning in for such a young group!).

It takes a pretty amazing team to commit to that level of ‘outside of the classroom’ mahi, so please take a moment to thank our people at the end of the term. Our young people are very fortunate and they can be encouraged to take the time to thank their teachers and learning coaches also.

Thank you for the massive support of our market day last week. We reached our financial goal to build a gaga pit as a lasting legacy from our Year 8 students. This adds to our awesome list of developments on the horizon in our school property plans. More to come about this in upcoming newsletters.

On the community front, Term 4 is huge. It starts off with our Swamp Thing Golf event on the last Sunday of the term break - please get in touch with Tim Loftus or Cam Hall (check the promo poster in this newsletter) if you’d like to join in with a keen group engaged in taking a ‘long walk’ with a great purpose.

Then we’re into the final stretch of learning and all the opportunities to connect. We are particularly excited about our Term 4 project learning focus centred on cultural celebrations and sharing the awesome things about being in an increasingly diverse community. Our students spoke of this importance in our recent wellbeing survey, and we look forward to involving our school whānau in this learning too.

Our Battle of the Bays event is shaping up to be a great bookend for the year, and the local Redcliffs side, The ‘Candycanes’ are beginning their buildup. They’re on the lookout for some wahine to get involved this year too—you don’t have to be a footballer, just keen. Please get in touch with anyone in the team or super-coach Brendan Key - 027 511 4342

Wishing you all in our school community a well-earned rest and a build-up of energy reserves for the final push to finish the year strong. Over the term break, we shift into planning, and all the things that need doing to wrap up the year, set up the next one, and be ready to roll for another great term at Te Raekura Redcliffs School.

Thanks as always for your awesome support this term.
Ngā Manaakitanga,

Nick Leith

Redcliffs Cyclists Crowned Canterbury Champions!
Huge congratulations to our Redcliffs School cyclists for an incredible finish to the road cycling season!
  • Southern Tour Success: In early September, Joe Dimbleby and Jack Hatton tackled the four-stage Southern Tour near Blenheim. Competing against top riders from the South Island and Wellington, Joe secured a fantastic 5th overall, with Jack close behind in 6th!
  • Canterbury Champions: At the final road event of the year in Tai Tapu, the Y7/8 team—Angus Tomkins, Joe Dimbleby, Jack Hatton, and Liam McCall—braved tough, windy conditions to win the Team Time Trial, taking out the Canterbury title and bringing home the Kevin Searle Trophy!
All the boys represented Redcliffs with immense pride and determination—well done on a fantastic season!

Give Track Cycling a Go! With the road season complete, Canterbury Track Cycling is holding "Try the Track" sessions at the Denton Park velodrome. A few Redcliffs riders are heading along, and new riders are very welcome to join. Please contact Richie Dimbleby for more details.

Year 5/6 Netball team at Canterburys
Our netball team had a fantastic day at the Canterbury winter tournament! The team showed great determination, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day, giving their best in every game.
The team faced some tough competition throughout the day, with results of 4–4 against Te Waka, a fantastic 6–5 win over St Francis and placing 15th overall!
It was wonderful to see the team keep working hard, encouraging each other and never giving up, even when the games were challenging.
A huge thank you to Jess for coaching the team throughout the season and for all the time, encouragement and support she has given the players. We would also like to thank Olivia for being an awesome helper and role model on the day. She ran all the drills and warm ups and was a huge support to our awesome coach.
Well done to the whole team on a great season!
Orienteering Success!
Congratulations to Ari, a Year 6 student who entered into the Canterbury Orienteering Champs as a Redcliffs kid and came 2nd! Awesome achievement in an awesomely challenging sport.
Basketball Redcliffs Rebels Year 5&6
On Tuesday 22 September the Redcliffs Rebels played their final. The game started very slow for the team. Mackenzie scored the first two points after a few minutes in the game. The team only had 4 points in the first half against 17 points. A little wake up call from the coach made them realis that they can play basketball and the nerves for the final went away.
They enjoyed playing the game and made lots of points. Amber realised that the opposite team even played with six players at one stage, so the referee took 2 points away from the opposite team as they just scored. In the end the time ran out for the Redcliffs Rebels and they lost the game with 12-19. Despite the result, the team went to Burger King to celebrate a great season together!
(Thanks to Ymke for coaching an awesome season this year).

Message from Danielle
I’m a final-year Bachelor of Digital Screen student at the University of Canterbury. This year, I’ve been producing a student game project called Wiremu’s Tour, an educational experience designed to help children learn about Aotearoa’s native wildlife and conservation in a fun and interactive way. The game follows Wiremu, a friendly tour guide who travels around Aotearoa introducing children to native animals through stories, activities and fun facts. We’re excited to be showcasing the project at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve from Monday 28 September to Sunday 4 October, where visitors will be able to try the experience for themselves.
