Newsletter: Term 2 - Week 8
Exciting times at Te Reakura with our school production practices, the start of the FIFA Men's World Cup, and the final week of our Puawai project. The Puawai project was initially created so that teachers could interact with learners in different environments and mix up their opportunities with learners from across the school. In the time Puawai has been running, we have covered some great, wider curriculum offerings and, importantly, had the freedom to try new themes of learning and work with other students.
As a teacher who worked predominantly with Year 7 and 8 students during my time in the classroom, working with a fresh batch of 5 and 6 year-olds in a cardboard construction class has highlighted the teaching tools required to harness the raw energy of young, enthusiastic minds! (shoutout to our junior teaching team, who operate at a teaching level far beyond my capabilities).
Mixing up our learners is an awesome opportunity to build community within a school where kids are often only familiar with their own year group cohorts. That is why we’re excited to take the whole kura to the Climate Action Campus on the last Wednesday of this term. Experiencing new learning together enables connections to be established with new friends and leaders. Taking a few risks with how we structure learning is also exciting for us as school leaders. With the quality of teachers we have and the engagement levels of our young people, we are fortunate to be able to access new opportunities like this. If you missed our communication about this trip, please read it here.

As the production gears up and we rush towards show week, a big shoutout to Tiffany Ponniah, our teacher-director, who is putting it all together. It’s great to be able to focus on the performing arts with our students in an increasingly time-squeezed environment, while putting a new curriculum through its paces. School productions are a bit like the steamroller scene in Austin Powers… you know there is a deadline, but it isn’t until the panic sets in that it all comes together. If there’s anything you can do at home to help out, please help your child work on their class dance and help them practice singing the medley! Tickets are flying out of the office this week, so don’t delay and miss out on a great community school show.
Sponsorship Opportunity: If you’re keen for your organisation or business to be a sponsor, we do a great job of promoting your brand throughout our production. Get in touch with Rachael Davis in the office—even a small donation makes a big difference!
Thanks to those who took a moment to fill out the pulse check on reporting in the last newsletter. The results were pretty conclusive: 89% say print! It’s not too late to have your say.
Finally, a reminder around our attendance protocols if you are heading away during term time to see family overseas. Please take a moment to read our communication about the steps needed before you head away. We are operating in a closely monitored school attendance environment these days, so the more we are all on the same page, the better. With that said, thanks for your management at home of the winter colds and bugs as they arrive in our school. A day at home is often the best defence, and there is never an expectation for sick kids to be at school.

Help shape the next decade of public transport | The Metro Bus and Ferry Network is open for feedback until 24 June
Christchurch and the surrounding townships in Selwyn and Waimakariri are growing fast and the transport network needs to keep up. By 2050, there could be up to 700,000 people living here. Improving public transport is one of the most effective ways to reduce congestion, support growth, and keep people connected to work, school, recreation opportunities, and essential services. Without it, pressure on our roads will continue to increase.
Whether you use public transport every day, occasionally, or not at all – your feedback will help Environment Canterbury to prioritise improvements to the Metro bus and ferry network over the next decade. ecan.govt.nz/metroreview
