Term 2 - Week 6

Principal's Pānui

Kia ora koutou,

We are deep into our term of learning and all the awesome aspects that make our localised curriculum so engaging. We’ve had our garden to table programme swing fully into action (it’s a thing of beauty to watch), Puāwai project for cross curricular learning, our winter sport programme starting for the Year 5&6 students with matches against other local schools and some great sports back at school with Kelly Sports, competitors at zones cross country and our Year 8 student group making preparations for their trip to China next term.

Shifting into the back half of the term we head all down the rabbit hole into our school production, Alice in Wonderland. Class dances are coming together and our actors are looking great in their costumes, running through their scenes - a big thanks to Will Hall for his generous time and support bringing some world class acting chops to our cast preparations. Our PTA are also into their planning around the awesome hospitality offerings during the production nights. It will be great week of performing to look forward to.

To keep the engagement opportunities at peak level, we’ll be taking the whole school to the Christchurch climate action campus in the last week of term. On Wednesday 1st July, we will be taking part in a special programme designed to celebrate the Matariki, and connecting with our environment. This will be an awesome day off-site and we will be looking for whānau help to make this day a winner. More info will be coming home in the very near future.

Our school reporting schedule is moving towards mid-year reporting time. This will see the first of two formal reports shared with you for 2026. We have made the decision to publish these in line with new national guidelines around what is required to be shared with you at home - but timeframes to produce this have been extremely tight. Starting with a complete overhaul of our student management system, staff professional development in regards to how to use the new system, whilst reporting for the first time on a new curriculum and a newly formed set of reporting progress descriptors. To put that in real world speak, its like being a pilot who arrives at the airport with a full load of passengers ready to fly, being given a new model of plane to learn to fly whilst being in the air, possibly having to land on one engine, whilst the airport runway is being constructed. No easy task whilst operating a classroom programme of learning in a big term of new opportunities! Our aim is to give you a clear example around what to expect our reports will look like, once we have worked through the finer details over the next couple of weeks. You can read more about what the Ministry expects you’ll see in more detail if you are interested but we are confident in our systems and our team’s experience and skill to manage this change (without having to eject from the cockpit).

I’m particularly interested in what happens to reports after all the hard work that goes into writing them. As a kid at school in the 1980’s my own school reports take pride of place in my parents archives shoebox (supremely proud of their first born child and their outstanding parenting contribution to society 😎). Where have previous reports ended up in your whānau? We’d love some feedback around a plan to print reports and share in the traditional method of years previous - reports will still be pushed to devices but could also come home with your young person to read and share around the kitchen table together. Please share your thoughts with us here.

We're coming to the end of another big week. Wishing you an enjoyable and restful long weekend - very well timed listening to some of the sniffing noses around the classes this morning.

Library News

I am thrilled to announce that our school is participating in the Scholastic Book Club again. Twice a term, your child will bring home a catalogue filled with a fantastic selection of books at great prices. Not only is this a wonderful, affordable way to fuel your child’s love for reading, but it also directly benefits our school. For every purchase made, Scholastic rewards us with up to 20% of the total sales back in Scholastic Rewards. We use these rewards just like cash to stock our library shelves, upgrade classroom reading corners, and purchase valuable educational resources and teaching supplies. By supporting the Book Club, you are helping us build strong reading habits at home while directly enriching our classrooms. It’s a win-win for everyone!
Please Note: To ensure a smooth and secure ordering process, all payments must be made online via the Scholastic LOOP platform (available online or as an app). Please note that the school cannot accept cash or paper orders at the office. Ordering online is quick, easy, and guarantees your order goes through safely.

Thank you for your cooperation!

International Students need Host Family in Redcliffs

Te Raekura Redcliffs School is hosting a small group of nine students from Jingshan School in Jinan, Shandong, China in August this year as part of an exchange program that is run by One World Education. The group of Year 7 and 8 students will be hosted at Te Raekura for a week, during which they will require accommodation with a New Zealand host family.

At this stage, we are expecting students to arrive on Sunday 2nd of August and depart on Saturday 8th August. By acting as a host family, the expectations are that the students are provided meals and a safe place to stay, as well as transport to and from school daily. It is often appreciated if two students can be hosted by the same family, but this is not mandatory.

If you are interested in becoming a host family for a student, or students, in this group, please email me (international@redcliffs.school.nz) and I will send you a Homestay Application pack with further information. You certainly don't need to have a child in Year 7 or 8 to apply. Families that are approved and act as hosts are currently reimbursed at $350 per student, per week.

Thank you for supporting our international visitors.
